DR. OWUSU AFRIYIE AKOTO, LEADER WITH FORESIGHT (PROPONENT AND INITIATOR OF GREEN GHANA)
Winston Churchill once said that “the empires of the future are empires of the mind”.
An adept leader is the one who makes right forecasts and makes necessary plans towards them.
The much talked about “Green Ghana” policy being rolled out by the Forestry Commission of Ghana was propounded and initiated by Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto as the Member of Parliament for Kwadaso Constituency in 2011 when over forty-seven thousand, six hundred and forty (47,640) teak trees were planted under the first phase of the project in a space of two (2) years in 24 Basic and Junior High schools. This was subsequently followed by planting of over ten thousand (10,000) trees in 2013 which constituted the second phase of the project.
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto saw the need to “Green” Ghana at the time, which necessitated the launch of the program in schools, to preserve the environment and also serve as a source of income generation for the beneficiary schools.
This program centered on planting of trees in schools basically to preserve the ecosystem, and as well, make students part of it in order to leave imprints on their minds so that tree planting becomes part of them while they grow.
Today, what was prioritized by Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto some years back has been accepted by the whole nation, and the entire Ghanaian citizenry is being urged to go out planting.
One wouldn’t be wrong to agree with Wilfred Peterson who opined that “big thinking precedes great achievement”.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto has espoused raft of ideas and policies which put him on a pedestal worth celebrating.
On this backdrop we say “AYEKOO” to Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto for his wits and acumen channelled to propel Ghana in such a positive direction.
