In furtherance of the fight against illegal mining in the Country, I was joined by Deputy Minister Designate for Information, Madam Fati Abubakar, Mr. Sulemana Koney, CEO, Ghana Chamber of Mines and SP. Samuel Asiedu Okanta, a representative of the IGP to commission a SWAT team comprising of 202 personnel from the Ghana Police force.

The team drawn from all 16 regions in Ghana will be deployed to protect concessions of Large-Scale Mining Companies in the country.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor at the ceremony held at the Police Staff and Command College in Winneba, I reiterated government’s commitment to fighting illegal mining and ensuring the restoration of our forest reserves and water resources.

The selected police personnel will operate on the concessions of Anglogold Ashanti (Obuasi & Iduapriem Mines), Goldfields Ghana Ltd (Tarkwa & Damang), Asanko Gold, Ghana Manganese Company, Newmont Ghana Ltd etc to ensure that, Large-Scale Mining Companies’Concessions are free from encroachment which have the tendency of avoiding illegal access to the Nation’s Resources by unlicensed firms and individuals.

The fight against illegal mining is a national effort to protect our natural resources – an effort that requires support from all Ghanaians.

The Nana Addo-led government is committed to sustainable mining to ensure that, our national heritage is well protected for generations.

#Fixingit and we shall deliver.

Thank you.
