PRESIDENTIAL SPOUSAL SALARY PAYMENTS; TO TAKE OR NOT TO TAKE……THAT IS THE QUESTION?????
Raynelle Boadu opines…….
In a society where hypocrisy and dishonesty are the core principles of its leading opposition party, progress and development suffers.
But with determination, perseverance, a strong spirit and a positive mindset we shall overcome their negativity.
Ghana, like it or not has seen massive improvements of seismic proportions in all aspects of our national life since the advent of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s government in January, 2017. Needless to bore you stiff, the list of achievements is endless.
However, there remains admittedly, several issues that are unresolved, not for a lack of trying or commitment but for the sheer volume and enormity of it. Yet we remain resolute as a government to stay on course and resolve these for the good and betterment of mother Ghana.
A nation that does not honour its heroes (heroines) is not worth dying for. To have the spouses of former presidents wallow in abject poverty and reduced to paupers going about cup in hand after the demise of their husbands is despicable to say the least.
Whether salaries or allowances, stipends or wages, emoluments or remunerations, we all accept and agree that these spouses ought to be catered for and very well.
So to have the NDC, the originators of this presidential spousal payments via the late Jerry John Rawlings, disingenuously turn around to bastardise Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo for continuing what John Mahama did but in an unofficial manner as recommended by the emoluments committee and approved by parliament is damn right hypocrisy to be charitable. “To play on the keyboards of people’s emotions”, to quote Mr. Kwaku Baako, just for the cheap political points it will score them is unprincipled and indeed petty.
Mr John Mahama, under his presidency paid his wife Lordina Mahama a whopping GHC 22,700 monthly allowance for the four years of his presidency but today he is criticising efforts to formalise these payments for political expediency. Shame on you Mahama, shame on you NDC.
I applaud very loudly the principled stance of her Excellencies the first and second ladies for rejecting these payments going forward and refunding to state coffers monies received in the past concerning these allowances. I call on Lordina Mahama and Mrs Amissah – Arthur, ex first and second ladies respectively to follow suit and as a matter of principle refund all such payments to state coffers since their party is feigning innocence, being selectively amnesic and choosing political convenience. Their hypocrisy is disgusting and stinking to the high heavens.
Today’s Ghana is undoubtedly better than yesterday’s and will certainly hopefully be even better tomorrow. Let us continue on the path of development, never mind covid and its debilitating effects, and stay the course to achieve our developmental goals.
