THE GIRL CHILD COORDINATOR OF KINTAMPO MUNICIPAL EDUCATION DIRECTORATE SENSITIZE SCHOOL GIRLS ON MENSTRUAL HYGIENE
Today, 28th may 2021 happens to be the world menstrual hygiene day. This annual event,which was instituted by German based NGO WASH united in 2014 is meant to advocate for good menstrual hygiene accros the world.
In 2014, the united nations announced that menstrual hygiene is a public health issue. A report in 2014 by an NGO called Dasra mentioned that, annually 23 million girls drop out of school due to the accessible menstrual hygiene facilities.
It is against this background that the Girl child coordinator for of kintampo North municipal education directorate madam Janet Adu-Baah together with school base Girl child facilitators met girls in public schools today and sensitized them on the menstrual hygiene, the indigenous ways of keeping oneself hygienic during their menstruation days up to the modern way of doing it, stigmatization surrounding the menstruation, culture and customs against menstruation, demonstration on how to use the sanitary pad and panty liner.
The theme for 2021 is ” Action and investment in menstrual hygiene and health” is celebrated to changing rooms that are ladies friendly which will help ladies change themselves during menstruation, break taboos surrounding menstruation, raise the awareness of the importance of good menstrual hygiene management worldwide.
The Girl child coordinator also advised parents to educate their girl child on menstruation and menstrual hygiene and also support them with sanitary pads during menstruation period.
She also pleaded with philanthropist and all stakeholders to come into the aid of the girl child by giving them sanitary pads.
