President Akufo-Addo, in his update 26 to the nation touched on several measures to help contain the recent rises in the number of infections in Accra and Kumasi.

One of the items he harped on which I find to be progressive is this decision to have vaccines manufactured locally.

He touched on the plans rolled out to materialize this cherish idea with the state ready to commit $25 million into this all-important project.

Ghana is set to be a hub for the manufacturing of COVID-19 vaccines to serve the West African zone and beyond. Local pharmaceutical companies are in on this project and this will boost their operations, generate income and employ many into the industry.

COVID-19 is here with us. It is showing no signs of leaving us alone. It has become an integral part of our very existence. Therefore, steps must be taken to accommodate this ailment.

It is against this backdrop that the President’s commitment to get Ghana to become a powerhouse in the manufacturing of these vaccines must be applauded.

As usual, the doomsayers are only interested in the monetary aspect of this project. Some opposition elements have started raising eyebrows with the promised $25 million when the details of how it will be used are unavoidable.

What is important is that President Akufo-Addo has shown that the safety of the Ghanaian people is paramount to him and is ready to go the extra mile to continue protect the people.
